Enough really is enough

Friends,

It seems as though being a pastor these can be quite lucrative, at least for a peculiar minority. While many leaders struggle to make ends meet, others drive their fancy cars, take luxurious vacations, and mix and mingle at the finest clubs and restaurants. Is it just me, or is there something wrong with this picture?

Even in days long past, some assemblies enjoyed great provision from the Lord. The critical moment comes, though, when some leader has to decide what to do with the surplus.

2 Chronicles 31:10-11 (NKJV)
And Azariah the chief priest, from the house of Zadok, answered him and said, Since the people began to bring the offerings into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat and have plenty left, for the LORD has blessed His people; and what is left is this great abundance. Now Hezekiah commanded them to prepare rooms in the house of the LORD, and they prepared them.

In this passage, the leader - King Hezekiah - chose to use the surplus to fill the LORD's house, so that they were ready for the lean times. He didn't choose to upgrade his chariot or his castle. He didn't redirect any of it for new robes for himself or his queen. He didn't even use it to buy advertising space for the temple on the side of the camels and horses that roamed the nearby wilderness.

And how do we use our surplus? I am not charged with the stewardship of tithes or gift offerings, but the LORD has provided for my household in abundance. Does that entitle me to buy toys? If you are responsible for moneys offered to Jesus, are you using those resources for your convenience or for His honor? Is any in your congregation struggling? I'll not belabor this point any more. Rather, I leave you with this admonishment, with this reminder - if you will.

It's not our money; It's His. Use it as though you will answer for every penny, because we will answer for every penny.

Jose

Success Roadmap

Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD
your God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you by the way you should go...
Isaiah 48:17 (NKJV)

In His righteous judgement and pronoucement on the prideful, arrogant and haughty one symolized by the Babylonian lady, the Lord (in Isaiah 47) repeatedly stated His rejection of these traits in anyone, a nation, a kingdom or any of His creation. But to them that will not put their trust solely on ther own know-how, and other tangible things, the road map to good, lasting, sustainable success from generations to generations is found in the scripture above.

Oh, that you had heeded My commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, And your righteousness like the waves of the sea. Your descendants also would have been like the sand, and the offspring of your body like the grains of sand; His name would not have been cut off nor destroyed from before Me.”
Isaiah 48:18-19 (NKJV)

The consequences of following this road map are best described in the preceding verses as well. Now this is one word that we must not take lightly. ...Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken. I Samuel 1:13 [KJV]

When we read about Hannah, in the beginning, she has been treated poorly by her husband and the other wife because she has been barren. When she took her problem to God during their trip to the temple, Eli thought that she was drunk and being disrespectful. He was ready to kick her out of the temple. However, Hannah was praying from her heart to God. Crying out in her time of persecution. She was having a very private and intense session with God. He was listening to every word that she was saying. He was in the midst with her at that moment. God was giving Hannah His Undivided and Divine Attention.

In our lives, we are sometimes concerned with how things look to others. In times of deep turmoil, we can get to the place where Hannah was. We can get closer to God than ever before and truly poor out our heart to Him. When we are in those moments in our lives, we forget about everything around us and we get completely in tune with God, who He is and how much He loves us. We don't worry about perceptions. We then become God's instrument to do work. When we are in a place that God can use us, we can accomplish things that seemed impossible before. Let's forget about how it looks to others and let's get in tune with God. He is the only one that matters.

Don't worry about outside judgment,

Martin

Bringing the Word alive

Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,Years have gone by, yet there has been no change to that circumstance and situation.
Ezekiel 37:12-13 (NKJV)

It’s a common excuse to cling upon after a prolonged season of pain, lack, confusion, failure and no results. The gruesome elements of life can be very harsh to our lives that a previously fertile ground can suddenly experience decay and decimation, albeit temporarily. But thank God we have a spoken word - the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life...This word is crucial to our daily living; the word is the mirror and the windshield to our vehicles in our daily navigation on the roads of life. Imagine a car without mirrors and windshields! A life lived like this is just a disaster waiting to occur. Do you have the word in your life? Do you use the word when the times are good and when the times are rough? The word is there for our use all through our sojourn here on earth, we must use it... to meet our needs, fellowship, witness, etc.

When the times are not that convenient, bring the word alive in you and around you. Give praise all the same and thank God for His faithfulness and bring Him in remembrance of His words.

The will to speak

Friends,

Last night, my wife, my daughters and I went to see Prince Narnia, the latest in the Disney adaptations of the amazing series by C. S. Lewis. It was truly a fun movie, with mature, well-developed characters and a clear, strong story. Afterwards, my wife remarked how easy it was to see the references to scripture throughout the film. She could see the Gospel proclaimed in scene after scene. She broached this topic with some old friends that we ran into, but the conversation fell flat... even though these were professing, Bible-believing Christians. On the way home, the Lord reminded me of His words...

Luke 9:23-26 [NKJV]
Then He said to them all, If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels.

Are our old friends headed for glory? It's not for me to say. But as we drove home, we talked about a lost opportunity to speak of Jesus in the midst of a dark world. I am confident beyond doubt that the true Gospel will reach all the Lord has elected, for He is sovereign and will lose none of His chosen. Yet, the excitement of being His instrument for last night's moviegoers will be for some other Christian. We had our shot.

When the Lord presents you with a similar opportunity, what will your response be? Will you be quiet and unoffensive? Or will you have the courage to sow seed?

What God sees

Friends,

There are many traditions that people cling to. Some, like Independence Day parades, help to unite a people through celebration. Others, like brushing your teeth, keep us healthy. Some cause us to remember what our Lord has done for; praying before a meal comes to mind. These are, for the most part, beneficial rituals. And yet, we well know the danger of allowing the ritual to take the place of a true relationship with Almighty God. Just because a man goes to church every week doesn't mean that he is an elect of God. This is nothing new to regular readers.

Today, let's look at it from the other side. What about the people who don't fit the mold? Are we, in our comfort with tradition, excluding them from our fellowship because they don't "look" like believers? How does God see His people? I am confident in saying that it is not how you and I see His people. The Lord of lords sees far more than we do.

2 Chronicles 30:18-20 [NKJV]
For a multitude of the people, many from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet they ate the Passover contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, "May the good LORD provide atonement for everyone who prepares his heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers, though he is not cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary."
And the LORD listened to Hezekiah and healed the people.

The events portrayed here took place when true worship was being restored after generations of idol worship, captivity and horrendous violations against God's law. The people may not have been "ritualistically" clean. They hadn't done what they were supposed to be doing. In other words, on the outside, they were a mess. But pay close attention to Hezekiah's prayer. He beseeches the Father to provide atonement for everyone who prepares his heart to seek God. And in the last line, God reveals that He does just that.

For you and me, this means that we must do two things. First, recognize that God prepares a heart for Him to view, not always for us to view. Second, and most importantly, we must be sure that our own hearts are prepared to worship Christ in spirit and truth. The Lord promises healing for our soul when our hearts are ready.

Forsake, not justify

And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
Luke 16:15 (NKJV)

Man always and usually forgets his mere mortal nature while trying to portray a larger than life posture. All have sinned and fallen short of God's mark, but yet we have a gracious and merciful God who gives us another chance.

He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.
Proverbs 28:13 (NKJV)

The Lord bestows His mercies on us when we come clean and humble ourselves before him. Man may fail in there personal endeavors... Marriage, business, relationships, lifestyles, etc. Man's wisdom seeks to justify his failures, which leads him down to a reprobate, seered and altered conscience and ultimate destruction. Our best justifications is like a filthy rag before God, because He knows our heart and we can hide nothing before Him. Confessing and forsaking our sins, shortcomings, weaknesses, etc before Him is the smart and best thing to do. To do otherwise will be to our peril.

Just Faith Alone

Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. James 2:17 [KJV]

There is a delicate balance between faith and works. All works and no faith are just something to do. Whereas all faith and no works just give us something to know. But when we put those two together, we get the spread of the gospel. The good news gets spread when we pray and live on our faith, which becomes action. We have faith to know and act on the Word of God.

Faith alone leaves everyone including us wanting. We know what must be done, but we are not getting any results because we are not putting forth any effort. Actions alone keep each of us wondering what will be the next good deed to be performed and suddenly we have a chart counting what we are doing and what the anticipated payback will be.

In order to fulfill the work that Christ left for us, we must put faith and works together. When we do, we are able to move mountains. The promise of life more abundantly is only available when we use faith and works together, for we can change the course of history by stepping out on our faith and doing the work of God which stands before us.

Unbelief and the Spirit of Grace

Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
Hebrews 10:28-29 (NKJV)

The price and penalty paid on our behalf is so enormous that the gravity of taking these for granted cannot be and should never be taken lightly. This is such a big deal that we must as children of Faith continue to excercise and operate in this consciousness and never bring this eternal gift to disrepute. Mere exercising of unbelief insults the spirit of grace, the singular act also trivializes the priceless, invaluable, eternal, life-changing, salvation and glorius gift to all that will receive and believe Him.

Let us therefore hold firmly on our promises with reverence and our steady faith without which it will be impossible to please our Creator.

A command to know

Friends,

Each one of us is faced with decisions, great and small. Some wait upon the Lord, earnestly and patiently seeking His will for each choice. Others move out, confident that no matter what happens, it is in His hands. No matter which describes you, the Lord commands that you be wise:

Ephesians 5:17 {NKJV}
Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

Wisdom, which begins with the appropriate reverence and awe for His Lordship, is knowing His will. It means striking the right balance: neither acting impulsively or presumptuously nor being paralyzed with fear and unbelief. That point is a peaceful place. It is confident. It is thoughtful. It is full of prayer and faith and courage and boldness. As frail and fallible men and women, we don't always get it right. But we must continue to strive for it, for its reward is truly a blessing.

True Rest

Friends,

When planning a vacation, our imagination makes out to be a time of endless relaxation and fun. We get excited about the prospect of enjoying every minute of every day, even if it just means sleeping in. Unfortunately, there is the aftermath... an inbox full of messages, a desk piled high with work, and a group of (perhaps secretly envious) coworkers who expect you to be ready to throw yourself back into the ring. After all, you've been relaxing for the last 2 weeks; you should be full of energy.

Thankfully, there is another kind of rest. It is a real rest.

1 Kings 5:4-5 [NKJV]
But now the LORD my God has given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary nor evil occurrence.
And behold, I propose to build a house for the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD spoke to my father David, saying, "Your son, whom I will set on your throne in your place, he shall build the house for My name."

When the LORD brings us into salvation, He gives us the kind of rest that we only dream about. And in truth, those dreams don't even come close to the rest that God promises ... and delivers. Imagine being at war; not for years, or even decades, but for generations. And then, that war comes to an end, not with an uneasy truce but with total victory and complete peace. The sounds of battle quickly become a faded memory, replaced by the beautiful movement of every day life. It is as if the entire world is breathing a sigh of relief.

Aaaaaaaahhhhh... rest.

That kind of rest and peace is available to every believer. He holds it out to you and to me. He holds nothing of this gift back. And if you are not experiencing it today, then turn to His word. He will speak to you, wherever you are and whatever you're doing. And His peace will begin to flow and His rest will fill you.

He's willing, Just come

When He had come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him. And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
Mathew 8:1-4 (NKJV)

The Leper of course had nothing to lose but all to gain. His situation wasn't so good and looked almost hopeless in that day. Rather than keep silent and continue to shield his issues... sorry there are some issues that can't be shielded or protected no matter how much we try. Leprosy falls into one of these, so the Leper did a couple of things. He anxiously waited for the right opportunity (preparation), when one became available, he seized and took advantage of it without delay (no procastination) by going to and worshipping the Lord (reverence and worship). And then he 'asked' according to the multitude of the tender mercies of the Lord... "If you are willing, you can make me clean". He never brought up excuses, or made any attempt to cover up his sins or display any trace of self-righteousness.

Acts of self-righteousness, covering up of our sins, justifying our acts that are contrary to His commandments, and playing the excuse card will never redeem a hopeless situation and case, but coming boldly and with humility to the throne of grace, we will find favor, grace and mercy in an ever willing God. We only need to take it all to him, no matter the magnitude of our circumstance. He is always willing.

Who Gets The Heavy Burden Now?

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 [KJV]

In this passage of Matthew, we see that Christ is requesting that we come to Him and receive rest. All that He ask is that we learn about Him. There couldn't be a simpler way to give away our heavy burden, right. But we have questions about the burden that we are giving up? Like "Who gets the heavy burden now?

If Christ is not concerned with that, why should we be concerned with that? We spend a lot of time trying to figure out how God does His Work instead of enjoying his work. We want to know the inner workings of how things are accomplished for us. Sometimes we are curious, or want to be amazed, or sometimes we want to see how we can do it ourselves. God's ways are mysterious and His Wonders to perform are a benefit for us when we need one (and we often do).

He will handle the heavy burden if we take on His Yoke and follow His Commandments. Don't worry about the burden that we are laying down, just about the new journey that we are starting.

No excuses

When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.
John 5:6-9 (NKJV)

It is very common for man to always assign a reason or excuse to every situation he finds himself in. We cannot really change our past but we can shape our present and future by responding appropriately to our circumstances. The man with infirmity at the pool of Bethesda was asked if he wanted instant healing.... a simple Yeah or Nay response, of course his response was a descriptive terse of the excuse or reason why healing had eluded him till now.

Don't we seek or create excuses when we only need to come boldly to the throne of grace to ask for His mercy, grace, help and intervention on our situations? Like the man at the pool of Bethesda, you can rise and move beyond your present situation if you quit seeking excuses, but believe and never doubt.

A burden lifted

Friends,
Psalm 32:3-5 (NKJV)
When I kept silent, my bones grew old
Through my groaning all the day long.
For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me;
My vitality was turned into the drought of summer. Selah

I acknowledged my sin to You,
And my iniquity I have not hidden.
I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,"
And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

Can you relate to those first four lines?
Have you ever felt that way, with the weight of unconfessed sin bearing down on you like a carcass draped across your back?

The burden of iniquity will do that to a person. We keep it to ourselves, thinking that we'll somehow avoid the pain that so appropriately accompanies our transgressions. But instead of avoiding pain, we end up compounding it. Just as a lie entangles us with its web of deceit, the silent sin wraps itself around us until we can scarcely breathe, let alone live the abundant, joyful life that Christ has earned for us.

Now, look at the second half of those verses above, starting with the writer's confession. Do you see the change in tone? Read them aloud, and hear the relief, the joy and the hope in those words. When will we finally realize that the way to shake that dead weight from our shoulders is to run to the cross? The Lord promises that He will forgive us. And when He lifts that burden we can and will feel lighter than air, as if we can leap across the plain like a gazelle. And then the joyful, abundant life will pour down like rain.

Learning more about the Lord

Friends,

Whenever God has done a work, it is truly complete. Our perspective of it is necessarily limited, and therefore incomplete. So we might not understand it, or perhaps fail to see the its perfection and goodness. It is at those times that our faith in the Lord must be strong and unwavering. It is then that we must believe what Solomon wrote thousands of years ago:

Ecclesiastes 3:14 [NKJV]
I know that whatever God does,
It shall be forever.
Nothing can be added to it,
And nothing taken from it.
God does it, that men should fear before Him.

God's purpose in fulfilling His will is clear. It is so that you and I should fear Him. That fear is the beginning of a more complete understanding of the Lord's character. And the more we get to know our Father, the more like Him we will become. And the more joyous it will be as we praise Him for all eternity.

Vintage time

Then He began to tell the people this parable: “A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time. Now at vintage-time he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. Again he sent another servant; and they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out.
Luke 20:9-12 (NKJV)

Even as the Lord used this title in a parable so also is its applicability to every custodian of God's gifts, talents and breath of life. The custodians in this scenario lost focus and their real mission. When vintage time came, they were totally unprepared and sought to justify their unpreparedness by taking away the accountability phase of their life - i.e. hostility to anything that represented this accountability requirement.

Is your life hostile to this accountability requirement that's upon your life? To be and remain hostile is to come against the same stone that the builders have rejected. As the times and seasons of life stands, Vintage time will surely come, be prepared.

But I am not having a great time right now.......

Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. I Thessalonians 5:16-18 [KJV]

How can I do this? My job is gone, my finances are in trouble, my wife/husband and I are having trouble relating, my children are not demonstrating Christian qualities, my church is going through some trouble. These are a few of the many circumstances that cause us to wonder about how God can ask us to rejoice, pray and give thanks. We don't feel like God is looking out for our best interest. We feel as if God has moved on from our lives and we have no way to bring Him back in.

The scripture teaches us that He is always with us even until the end of time. He will never leave nor forsake us. God has a larger plan for each of us that would include how we handle adversity when it comes around. When we think of handling adversity, we often think of Job. He was able to keep his faith and live with God and was eventually restored. Sometimes we cannot wait for the eventually and start our own plan to restoration. God has a plan and that plan will always result in Him getting the glory and for us, the satisfaction that we are in the will and protection of God.

Doing Good Mindset

Now when He had departed from there, He went into their synagogue. And behold, there was a man who had a withered hand. And they asked Him, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”—that they might accuse Him. Then He said to them, “What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and it was restored as whole as the other. Then the Pharisees went out and plotted against Him, how they might destroy Him.
Mathew 12:9-14 (NKJV)

When people are passionately motivated by a motive, goal and mindset, it sometimes (or most times) trump their sense of good or bad. Their minds are vigorously manipulated to pursue every action to justify their motive. The Pharisees plotted to bring down and nail the Savior through all sort of means. The well being of their fellow human being or nothing seems to matter. To the them, only the end justifies the means. Everyting, including God's creation is a veritable tool in their hands to pursue their expected ends.

However the Savior appealed to their heart and soul to elevate the pursuit of doing good over evil, laws, all motives, and intent that are not in line with God's will. The doing good mindset is spirit driven, one whose intent are sincere, true and means well. Are all our motives aligned with His will? Do we pursue goals solely to gratify self or be a means to serve mankind? The Savior's act as recorded in the scripture was propelled towards the common good for the Kingdom. Are your motives driven by passion for the common good and Kingdom causes?

Use with caution

Friends,

We all know to refrain from using any of the names of God as a cuss word. But does that mean we never use His name? Certainly not! Even though there are some people who've been raised to never, ever utter the name of the Lord, scripture tells us to call upon His name and to use it with reverence and fear.

Psalm 86:11 [NKJV]
Teach me Your way, O LORD;
I will walk in Your truth;
Unite my heart to fear Your name.

When we have the correct awe and respect for God, we will have the correct awe and respect for His name. And when we have that, we can call upon His name appropriately, opening our heart to experience His power and blessing in our life.

Afraid to hear from God?

Friends,

The LORD wants to talk to you and to me. He has been speaking to His people for thousands of years. But His people often don't want to hear it. This is nothing new. Israel, when they were at the mountain getting God's commands directly from His mouth, just wanted to shut their ears and say, "La la la la la."

Exodus 20:18-19 [NKJV]
Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. Then they said to Moses, "You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die."

Almighty God has shown us that He is powerful, holy and perfectly demanding. He has also proven that He is generous beyond imagination, tender, loving and patient beyond comprehension, and more protective than a mother bear. In short, our God has demonstrated that He is our Father, and as a perfect Father, He would never hurt us nor allow anything to hurt us.

Knowing all of this, why then would we be afraid to hear from Him? Is it because we know that we have fallen short of His standard of holiness? Is it because He may tell us things that our flesh doesn't want to hear? Are these good reasons?

Brothers and sisters, open the ears of your heart. Listen for His voice. Go to His word so that you recognize Him when He speaks. The Father wants to speak to you. He wants you to obey Him, which requires that you hear Him. Again, open your heart to the voice of the Good Shepherd and experience His true blessing.

In and Out of season

Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, ‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’” Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them?
Luke 18:1-7 (NKJV)

In this Parable of the persistent widow, the Lord made the point of this very clear. The Judge in this case, a non-believer responded to the pleas and appeals of the unrelenting widow. How much more when we take our case to our Creator who is a just and faithful God. Are you weary in praying? are you bothered that your prayers don't get answered? The widow never gave up on herself until the Judge responded. We have a God who responds to us on His own timing. We must be consistent and never be weary, taking our case to Him at all times. He hears, for He is a faithful, gracious, merciful, and just God.
