Jesus told His closest friends...
You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.

Jesus chose us for His reasons. He did so before time began. It wasn't because He thought we would be good followers. That would imply that we would have been good followers without Him.
Now that the Lord has chosen us, our part is to "go and bear fruit." In order to do so, we must search the scriptures, meditate on His law and obey it. We are not able to obey it perfectly, but His grace is sufficient to bring us to repentance and forgiveness. When we do this, we prove our love for Christ.
